What we did:
- Original windows replaced with efficient vinyl, double pane Milgards (triple pane in bedrooms). Aluminum sliding door replaced with an energy efficient Marvin
- Original, failing, engineered wood siding replaced with lasting Hardi Shingles
- Spruce trim replaced with termite and weather proof Boral
- Redwood handrail rebuilt to code
- Porch framing repaired and ceiling beadboard replaced

Chimney chase repaired
Chimney Chase: Evidence of leaks and rot were found in some sections of the home. This chimney chase was poorly built and sparsely nailed, thus a rebuild was in order.
Back Wall Demo
Back wall, ready for trim and siding: The new sliding door is in, framing has been repaired/added where necessary, 1/2” cdx plywood shear wall is installed, and a moisture barrier is in place. Waterproof!

WHat we found: Upon removal of the original trim and siding, we discovered the house hadn’t shear plywood but rather a cardboard product called Thermo-ply. We use Thermo-ply to temporarily protect floors, but it is insufficient as a shear wall here in California.
North wall In Progress: We tackled one section at a time, so as not to leave the home vulnerable to weather.

South Wall: Hardi Shingle installation begins. A new service panel cabinet was built to replace the failed original. New WUI approved foundation vents installed.

Columns and roof needed attention, so we built a platform, both to stand on and to protect the roof below.
Hardi Shingles come primed in yellow. The blue is the client’s paint selection.

New Handrail: The old handrail was no longer to code, and since the columns needed attention, a new redwood railing was installed.

Kentfield
This old home in Kentfield needed attention. The cedar shingles were worn thin and falling off. Barge rafters and trim boards were rotted through. Structural framing was compromised by years of water damage. A couple wood windows, while beautiful, were beyond repair. Thankfully we were able to salvage the steel corner windows, as they are such a unique component to this home.

New barge rafters and shingle mold installed.
Shingles and trim torn off, 1/2” cdx sheathing applied on top of original skip sheathing(nailed into studs). Barge rafters primed and painted. Roof patch-in completed.
New attic vent installed and shingling has begun. Before our new windows could be installed, we needed to shingle to the bottom of the openings to ensure a watertight installation.

This section of the home had a rotted, leaking wood gutter attached to rotten rafter tails. We removed the old gutter, cut the rafter tails back, treated them with penetrating epoxy, installed blocking for the final skip sheathing run, and finally a new color matched seamless gutter.

This home was built in 1911. A perimeter foundation was installed to replace posts and piers, new framing was installed to correct old, and to accommodate new windows and doors. A collapsing shed (to the left) was entirely rebuilt, including a walkway to it. New insulation, sheathing, windows, doors, cedar sidewall shingles and custom redwood window trim followed. We are currently working here, remodeling their bathroom.

Bel Marin Keys
We were called to address a large leak into the garage. Replacement retrofit windows were suspect and while they did leak, the major culprit was the roof to wall flashing. We replaced that flashing, repaired framing, insulated, replaced poorly fastened 3/8” sheathing with 1/2”, replaced all 4 windows with new construction Milgards, installed new siding and trimmed out with KD cedar.

We removed horizontal trim details like this, as they create a water trap without adding much aesthetic appeal.

The ledger is fastened to the foundation with epoxied bolts and nylon spacers behind. Framing is both pressure treated and redwood lumber, protected with joist tape. Hand selected Con Hart Redwood decking, fastened with stainless steel screws.

Suisun Marsh Duck Club
This hunting club complex had been added to several times over the decades. Several rooflines were connected haphazardly, collecting water and debris, resulting in leaks. We redesigned the roof to allow water egress.
